Stevie and Sue are very keen photographers, they contacted me a while back and mentioned they were coming to Guernsey for a break and could I teach them all about portrait photography for 3 days of the week they were here.
I put together a plan consisting of studio work and outdoor photography. The first day was a touch damp so we stayed in the studio and photographed Eden using a few different lighting setups. Day two was much better, hot and sunny so we went over to Herm. Everywhere is only a 5 minute walk in Herm (that’s what I told them, it may have been 10….) and we went along to Shell Beach and shot Eden in natural light, using flash and in the sea! A bit of posing and then it was off to the Mermaid for a bar lunch :).
When we arrived back in Guernsey we went down to the west coast for a sunset shoot with Eloise. Grandes Rocques was a great place to start. There was a fair bit of activity when we arrived, a few people had got stranded on the rocks and the full rescue team were setting up! After a few pictures we moved to Lihou Island. I wanted to show Sue and Stevie plenty of the island as we shot, Guernsey is an amazing island.
On the final day we started by looking at some of the pictures in Lightroom, then it was off out for another shoot and using different lighting, mainly hard light from our Elinchrom Quadra Ranger. We went to Fort Houmet with Alice Falla, she was happy to jump in the sea for us so we could photograph the wet look!!
On the final evening we went to Saumarez Park and photographed Sam and Karl with their children around the park using mainly natural light and looking for good backgrounds.
It was a great few days with Stevie and Sue, not a course I’ll forget in a hurry, great fun and a good laugh. They picked up a few Guernsey “Mikey” phrases while they were here I’m sure I’ll see them again in the not too distant future as I plan more away courses
